A ‘Bolt’ of innovation by Goal Zero.

There are countless ways to build a flashlight and the folks at Goal Zero have taken the time and really put some thought into the ‘Bolt’ and their take on this essential tool.

Billet aluminum with an abundance of machining and knurling produce a body that’s comfortable and secure in hand with great weight characteristics (6oz) and a quality feel. The Bolt measures 1.5″ x 1.5″ x 6.5″ making it a very manageable size for packing, stowing, storing or just carrying in your pocket.

The Bolt features a 3-watt ‘CREE’ LED light source, dual mode (height and low beams) with 160 Lumens of brightness giving up to a claimed distance of 120 meters. Power comes from an (included) rechargeable, Lithium-ion 3.7V 2Ah (7.4 Wh) battery.  An integrated USB port allows for convenient (re)charging from either the AC wall charger (included), any of Goal Zero’s cutting edge personal solar power kits and power packs, or nearly any device with a USB port. Additionally, the input is protected from dirt and moisture by a rotating rubber sleeve.  No caps to lose!

While charging, the bolt incorporates an indicator led which glows red, then changes to green when fully charged .  Goal Zero claims 0% to 100% in about 5-hours with a run time of 2-hrs at full power and roughly 10 hours at half power.

Another nice touch is the indexed focusing ring which allows for single handed adjustments from razor sharp ‘spot’ to a wide flood type beam .  As a lantern, the Bolt was able to light up a 14×14 black hole (my office with the lights out) sufficient enough to read the fine print on my car insurance declaration page. Impressive.
